Not long ago, a patient like this came to the outpatient clinic, a man, 45 years old, who complained of "nasal pain for two days". Inquiring about the medical history carefully, the patient developed nasal pain two days ago. At first, the pain was only a touch of the hand, and then gradually developed into persistent pain. There were no other symptoms such as nasal congestion, pus discharge, and nose bleeding, as well as fever and headache. Inquiry again and learned that he has the habit of picking his nose. A few days ago, he felt that his nose hair was a little long and worried that it would affect his image. He also plucked his nose several times.
When we checked for him, we found that the patient's nasal vestibular floor had a limited bulge, the skin was congested, and there was no pus on the top. No redness or swelling of the lips. There was no edema in the bulbar conjunctiva, both inferior nails were normal, and no new organisms were seen in the bilateral middle nasal passages. The last diagnosis given is nasal furuncle.
Many people think that boils are a very common disease. Boils can grow on the skin of any part of the body. Why is it so alarming? Is a small boil life-threatening? Don't believe it, Du Du will tell you about this seemingly simple but hidden danger-nasal furuncle.
What is a nasal boil? Nasal furuncle is a localized purulent inflammation of the nasal vestibule, the tip of the nose or the hair follicles, sebaceous glands, or sweat glands.
What are the clinical manifestations? The initial manifestations are purulent inflammatory manifestations such as redness, swelling, heat, and pain in the tip of the nose or a localized part of the front nostril. As the disease progresses, chills, fever, headache, and general malaise appear. Severe conditions can cause infections in surrounding tissues, orbits, and skulls, and severe cases or improper handling can be life-threatening.
What are the common causes?
1. Bacteria are often attached to the deep nose hairs of the front nostrils. Bad habits such as nose-picking, nasal hair removal, severe blowing of the nose, or strong rubbing of the tip of the nose can cause local skin damage and cause the bacteria to take advantage of the deficiency and cause purulent infection.
2. In the case of purulent inflammation of the nasal cavity or sinuses, pus repeatedly stimulates the skin of the nasal vestibule, causing skin damage and infection.
3. When tiredness, getting angry, irritated by tobacco and alcohol, etc., the body's immunity is reduced, it is easy to cause bacterial infection of the nasal vestibule and swelling of the nose.
How to treat nasal boils?
1. For local treatment, keep the nose clean. For local scabs, use a sterile cotton swab dipped in 3% hydrogen peroxide to clean the surface of the boil, and then apply an anti-inflammatory ointment.
2. When the nasal furuncle abscess is formed, you will see a small yellow-white "pus spot". At this time, do not directly squeeze it with your hands. After disinfection with an iodophor cotton swab, use a sterile needle to break the pus spot and remove the pus plug. Squeeze out and apply antibiotic ointment.
3. Give sensitive antibiotics. Patients with severe pain can be given analgesics. If you have diabetes, you must actively control your blood sugar.
4. In case of worsening symptoms or severe headaches, you should consult a doctor promptly.
5. If complicated with cavernous sinus thrombophlebitis, you must be hospitalized and given sufficient and effective sensitive antibiotics.
How to prevent it? In normal life, you should develop a good habit of picking your nose less, not plucking your nose hair, and not blowing your nose hard, and avoid squeezing or touching at will. Quit smoking and drinking, avoid spicy foods, drink more hot water, eat lightly, avoid staying up late, and pay attention to rest. By Du Jingyan (Beijing Chaoyang Hospital)
